What is the Sky Stream Puck?
Imagine being able to watch all your favourite Sky TV shows, movies and live sports without a satellite dish, bulky box or any complicated setup. That’s exactly what Sky Stream did for me. And at the heart of it is the tiny but powerful Sky Stream Puck.
Below, I’ll tell you what you need to know and how to get started with a setup like mine,
Meet Sky Stream
Sky Stream is Sky’s newest way to get TV into your home over the internet. It’s like Netflix or Disney+ but covers all of Sky’s channels as well. This means you don’t need a satellite dish on your house. I just needed broadband and a TV with an HDMI port.
Like me, you can stream the latest TV shows, blockbuster movies and live sports. All from just about £15/month for the basic plan.
What is the Sky Stream Puck?
Short answer: it’s the little device that makes Sky Stream work.
I find it easiest to think of it like a Sky-branded streaming stick or box. Similar to an Amazon Fire Stick or Roku, except it’s built to deliver the full Sky experience.
Key features include:
- Small & neat: About 10.8cm by 10.8cm, flat and discreet.
- Plug-and-play: Connect it to your TV via HDMI, plug it into power, join your Wi-Fi and you’re ready to go.
- 4K HDR ready: Supports high-quality video and sound (like Dolby Atmos), depending on your plan.
- Sky Glass UI: You get the same modern, easy-to-use interface as Sky’s own Sky Glass TVs.
The puck doesn’t record shows like a satellite PVR does. Instead, I added shows to a Playlist and can access them from the cloud whenever I want.
Does the Sky Stream Puck come with any extras?
The Sky Stream Puck also comes with a smart, voice-controlled remote, so you can simply say what you want to watch instead of endless scrolling. It’s much easier, trust me!
On top of that, the Sky Stream Puck brings together all the big streaming apps you already use. Think Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer all in the one place (availability depends on your plan and subscriptions).
Where does the Sky Stream Puck work?
Sky Stream (and the puck) is meant for use at the UK home address linked to your Sky subscription. If you try to use the puck abroad or even elsewhere in Europe, it won’t work. This is because content rights and licensing are specific to a particular region.
Officially, Sky doesn’t support using the Sky Stream Puck outside the UK, so you can’t just plug it in abroad and expect UK channels to work. So, this is why some people start looking at services like skystream.eu, which offer access to UK TV from overseas.
Why it matters
Sky’s move to using the puck reflects how traditional satellite boxes are being replaced with internet-based viewing. It’s cheaper, lighter and much simpler for people who just want great shows without any installation fuss.
Cut the dish, skip the setup and start streaming. Discover Sky Stream and see how the Sky Stream Puck can transform the way you watch TV.
